MaTh HoMeWoRk 11/7

VoCaBuLaRy: Estimation: Is a way to find an approximate answer instead of an exact one
Review: understanding common percents
You can find many common percents mentally, without using a calculator. look at the equivalent fractions or numbers for the common percents listed below:
10%=10/100=1/10 100%=100/100=1
25%=25/100=1/2 200%=200/100=2
50%=50/100=1/2
What you should know
To find 10% of a number, move the decimal point one place to the left in the number
To find 25% of a number, divide the number by 4
To find 50% of a number, divide the number by 2
100% of a number is itself
to find 200% of a number, double the number
Try it 1:
approx.$ 14,000
Try it 2:
approx. $8
Try it 3: approx. 750 customers

Once upon a time w/ GOLDILOCKS( w ribbons :)

Mother bear was three quarters the size of father bear.
Baby bear was half the size of father bear
and all the things they had were in the same proportions
this means that father bear's chair was 2x as big as baby bear's chair and mother bears chair came exactly in between
Q: if mother bear's chair was 60cm high, how high were the other 2 chairs?
A: Father: 80 , Baby:40
The diameter across the top of each bear's porridge bowl was three times the height
Father bear's bowl was 24cm across what was the diameter of mother bear's bowl and the height of baby bear's bowl?
A: Mother: 18Diameter baby:4Height
Goldilocks had all the same things as the bears, but hers were all sorts of odd sizes, some nearly as big as father bear's, and almost as small as

work: 5/6 X 3/6= 18/30 baby bears!
Father bear's spoon was 30cm long. Goldilocks' spoon was 5/6 of that
what proportion of Goldilocks' spoon was baby bear's spoon?
A: 18/30
work: 5/6 X 3/6= 18/30

Apathy

Apathy: noun: absence or suppression of passion, emotion, or excitement.
2. lack of interest in or concern for things that others find moving or exciting.

We have a problem.... we are not taking our 8th grade success seriously! Too many of you are refusing to complete assignments and worse, those that choose to complete them, are handing in mediocre work! This is unacceptable!! People, we need to understand what is expected of us (which I am pretty sure you do) and comply! Right now, we understand that you feel overworked (which you are not) and under appreciated (which is possible). However, you must stay steadfast with your goals and succeed. Persevere!!

As it stands, both class averages are holding steady around 60%. This is due to lack of homework completion and very poor test grades. If i do the math (and science) it is evident that not doing homework negatively affects my test grades, which in turn negatively affects your overall score.

Fix your attitudes. The more negative you are, the harder this life will be. Make it a bit easier on yourself.

Follow your syllabus. It is your plan for success. Someone has written a way for you to score 100% in a class. Why would you NOT read and follow it?

This is your warning. This week will be your final adjustment period. Detentions are next. Parent conferences are next. You may think we are playing, I am here to tell you, we are not.

Get it together. Now.

Back On!!

I apologize for the delay, but my technical difficulties are finally over!! I'm back and we need to get this blog back in full swing!! Thanks for your patience!

An Evening with Harriet Tubman and The Underground Railroad

We have been studying how to find distances on a map using map scales, a ruler, and proportions . We took a glance at how our African ancestors may have traveled through the Middle Passage. Now, this weekend we will travel with Harriet Tubman and other abolitionists as they risk their lives to free slaves from southern states in America. What cities will you go to?? How far will you travel?? Plan 10 escape routes and put yourself in their shoes. Be sure to record where you will escape from and where you will escape to. Also, be sure to follow the scale and record your calculations. Discuss why you chose these routes and how you feel being with Harriet Tubman.

Question: What does percent mean? Percent means out of 100

Describe how you can change a percent to a decimal and to a fraction. The way you can change a percent to a decimal is by doing...50% and you move it 2 spaces to the left and to change it into a fraction all u have to do is convert which gives you 1/2.

Describe how you can change a frraction to a percent. first you would want to convert the fraction into a decimal like so...1/2=o.5 or o.50 yhen you would have to move the decimal 2 spaces to the right.

Describe how you can change a decimal to a percent. The way you can change a decimal to a percent is by moving your decimal 2 spaces to the right

Why are percents useful in making comparisons? Percents are useful in making comparisons because they can help you find out how much is needed or how much is left. For example if you have 30 dollars and you wanted to buy slippers, but the slippers were half off you would only have to pay 15 dollars.

Explain how to find what percent one number is of another number. For example, what percent of 200 is 75?Draw a percent bar to help explain your thinking. The way you can find a percent of another number is, for example what percent is 200/50? I dont have my percent but i have my whole and part. So i would have to divide 200 into 50 which would give me 4 and thats it

Something that really bugs is the fact that people know they should do their homework, but if they dont they want it from you. sometimes it can be new principals that are suddenly changing rules now and then. About the first topic one of the student asked for my homework because they didn't do theirs. ''Here i said because i hate to use the word no to anyone in particular, but when their done i would tell my self i wont do it again but yet i do. About the second topic there was this ap in school that was a elementry ap and became a middle school ap. This new ap was changing and inforcing rule. I new i wasnt supposed to be rude to her so i let her do what she had to do. Ever since our lunch has been feeling like it was 5 minutes long.

My Favorite Subject

Since I can remember I loved one subject in school. I can go back as far as 1st grade and recall getting excited to learn in this class. When I went to 6th grade, there was more emphasis put on this subject and I loved it even more!! By the time I sat in a seat in Midwood High School in Brooklyn, I had many courses to choose from and this subject was mandatory. I aced it each year! I was sooooo in love with this subject, I made it my minor when I attended college at Clark Atlanta University. After college, I continued my studies and chose this subject as my topic. Knowing what my profession is now, I bet you're thinking I'm expressing my love for math... well, you are WRONG!! In fact, I HATED math!! I am still traumatized by long division and that was 4th grade!! But, math became much easier over time and it helps with basic thinking. All of that is dandy, but the subject I am discussing is Foreign Languages. I looooove language, even English. I love learning about grammar, rules, structure etc. I love the way Spanish, French and Portuguese sound! I long to speak another language fluently. I can't wait until I can roll my "r" with precision and be able to sit in the comfy emergency row the next time I visit Brazil! ( you can't sit there if you don't speak the language of the place you're going to) I am desperately waiting for my brain to get its act together and process all the French I know ( this is the language I studied the most) so, that I do not feel silly speaking when I go visit my family in France. But, as they say, practice makes perfect! So, one of my goals this year is to go to language school, a school where you spend hours intensively studying a language to become fluent. I just love so many languages, I don't know where to start! I have narrowed it down to Spanish, French and Portuguese. Which one do you think I should start with?

3) your Friday homework should be posted here, under the assignment.

4) your Friday journal should be posted here in class (hopefully our laptops don't give any problems.

5) NO TALKING RUDELY ABOUT YOUR TEAMMATES

6) NO POSTING INAPPROPRIATE PHOTOS OR VIDEOS

7) DO NOT post a photo or video of anyone, but yourself

I think that is all, but check back to see if anything else came up!

Baby Math

As I was preparing for your class today, a friend of mine in Ireland emailed to say that his wife had given  birth to twin daughters. They don't have names yet, but here they are.

So the fact that they are twins gives us a chance to keep our math minds sharp! Here's a question for you to do at home, if we don't have time in class: In what year will the combined age of my friends' twins be the same as your age?

Since they were born yesterday, they'll obviously both be one next year, 2011, which means their combined age will be 2. And it will be 4 in 2012 when they'll both turn 2; 6 in 2013 (turning 3), 8 in 2014 (turning 4) and so on. But REMEMBER: you get a year older in all those years too.  So when will the two figures become the same?

When you answer in the comments, tell me what age you are now, so I can check if your answer is right.

Quotes of the Day

"I hated every minute of training. But I said: Don't Quit. Suffer now, and live the rest of your life like a champion."

"The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses -- behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights."

"It's hard to be humble, when you're as great as I am."

The New School Year, with Michelle Obama

President Obama gave a speech yesterday welcoming you and all the other school students across America back for another year. Your teachers maybe already shared that with you, but, if not, you can read a news report about it here.

His speech made me think of another speech that his wife, Michelle, gave at the end of the last school year.

What I Learned...As My Head Bled

Back when I was the same age as most of you, my mom used to tell me to always pay attention to what was around me. Sometimes, even doing that isn't enough, especially if there are dangers that you don't expect.
